Birgitta Hedin-Curtin grew up on a self-sufficient farm Kärrboda in Södermanland, south of Stockholm, where she began fishing in the Baltic Sea as a child and was a member of “Fältbiologerna” a youth organisation studying Nature & Environmental Issues before going on to study Biology specialising in marine and she also studied Phycology with Professor Michael Guiry, NUIG. She is: Founder, Director & Manager of the Burren Smokehouse 1989 now employing 25 people in the village of Lisdoonvarna; Founder member of and chairperson of Slow Food Clare; Organiser of annual Burren Slow Food Festival since 2004; Former Member of Organic Focus group founded by Department of Agriculture, Forestry & Food; Member of Burren Geopark & Burren Code of Practice; Director and Member of Burren Ecotourism Network; Founder Member & Chairperson of Burren Food Trail.
